Huawei Launches First Laptop Running HarmonyOS as It Shifts Away from Windows Operating System

Huawei has announced the release of its first laptop featuring HarmonyOS, moving away from the Windows operating system. This development follows the company’s strategic shift in response to US sanctions that have restricted its access to software from American companies, including Microsoft.

For several years, Huawei has integrated HarmonyOS into its smartphones and smart TVs. The latest iteration of this operating system for laptops presents a desktop-style interface, complete with a taskbar and support for multitasking through resizable windows. The system also showcases advanced AI capabilities, highlighted by the performance of Celia, Huawei’s AI assistant, which can summarize documents and assist in creating presentation slides.

Though the new HarmonyOS laptop will not run the extensive library of Windows applications, Huawei has ensured that it will support over 2,000 applications at launch. This includes WPS Office, a Chinese alternative to Microsoft Office, as well as various social media platforms popular in China.
